Hi Linda (my mom's name, by the way...),

Thanks so much for your comments. I had such fun writing this piece, and its contents are alive and well in my kids' lives this year as we go about our traditions, opening up the doors on advent calendars, lighting the candles on our advent wreath, shielding terrified Emilia from Santa's many appearances about town, and, of course, reading Christmas books. Do check out the Vivas book. I like the older edition's design better than the new one, but I am just delighted that it's still in print.

It's a beautiful memoir that touched me in so many ways. I too as a mom wondered about the 'big lie' & I like that your mom taught you that it was just being included in the story. We read each book you mentioned except the Rivas book, & now it is a ritual to get all the Christmas stories out for the grandchildren. As my son in law is pretty religious, I think the Rivas book will make a good gift for him to have for his young daughters. I especially loved hearing about all the children's stories, and the thread you wove throughout about Rory & that he found the tune again. You must be a caring & thoughtful mom. Merry Christmas!
