I will say Make Way for Ducklings (1942) by Robert McCloskey is my favorite Caldecott–winning book because to say Where the Wild Things Are, which is also correct, would be just too obvious. Going with MWfD is hardly unconventional, but I chose it because it was utterly convincing; it made me think I knew Boston like the back of my wing, and that I was a duck.

winner of the 1998 Caldecott Medal for Rapunzel
