Caillou Stickers! (Night & Day Studios and Cookie Jar Entertainment, July 2012) is a straightforward digital sticker book for the preschool set. Users select one of seven backgrounds such as a schoolyard, birthday party, campsite, and park, then drag and drop brightly colored images of well-known PBS character Caillou, his friends, family, pets, and toys to complete the scene. Along the bottom of every screen, a strip of about twenty stickers offers several different versions of Caillou to choose from, plus a variety of setting-appropriate accessories. Little overlap in options from scene to scene means there’s plenty of new things to discover in each one. All stickers can be removed, repositioned, or rotated—a little tricky with my grown-up fingers—after placement.
The digital format allows for lots of fun not possible in a traditional sticker book. The individual images may be resized and used unlimited times within a given scene—so you could, for example, create a conga line of identical Caillous or a Godzilla-like Caillou towering over his playmates. In addition to the cheery background music, every sticker makes a distinctive sound effect when tapped. (My favorite: the ferocious roar from a blue stuffed tiger toy in Caillou’s playroom.) Users can save and/or email their completed pictures.
A friendly primary palette, rounded shapes, and ease of use make this app a good choice for any toddler, though it will probably appeal most to those who are already Caillou fans. Available for iOS (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch); $0.99. Android version coming soon.
