Thanks for the additional suggestions, Racheal. There are surely lots and lots more to add to our partial list. Does anyone else have ideas? Also check out this link (updated from Kathy Pillsbury's link in the comments section above) -- http://www.welcomingschools.org/pages/bibliographies-books-to-engage-students -- and our LGBTQ book list for young adults: http://www.hbook.com/2012/02/choosing-books/recommended-books/lgbtq-fiction/

This 'Books with Gender-Diverse Appeal' list is quite incomplete. I can think of a several books, just off the top of my head that should be on this list:

Goblinheart
My Princess Boy
The Paper Bag Princess
The Story of Ferdinand

I like your way of looking at books and gender -- looking for books that appeal to all kids. At Welcoming Schools, we've put together many bibliographies about gender -- books with role models for kids, gender and bullying, expansive gender roles for kids, gender identity and kids. These lists are geared towards elementary school educators and parents. You can check them out at www.welcomingschools.org/bibliographies-books-to-engage-students/. Thanks

Have you heard about Flamingo Rampant and their two trans-positive kids books? I know they have some new books planned for 2013 that are more gender-diverse, but I liked the first two. Nice to see trans-kid characters being treated respectfully and positively, and good stories too. My 5yo loves Tulip. And I have to say that's it's really nice to see POC/mixed kids and characters in the books too, especially since we're a multiracial family.

Yes. To all of the above. I would add the Clementine books to the list (and, encouragingly, more and more parents seem to agree).
