Last winter, overcome with mid-nineties nostalgia, I excitedly blogged about Lisa Loeb’s Silly Sing-Along: The Disappointing Pancake and Other Zany Songs (Sterling, January 2012). The cute bespectacled songstress is back with another picture book/CD package, Lisa Loeb’s Songs for Movin’ & Shakin’: The Air Band Song and Other Toe-Tapping Tunes (Sterling, April 2013).
These songs — a mixture of traditional favorites (“Miss Mary Mack,” “Do Your Ears Hang Low?”) and originals — are just as catchy and peppy as those in Loeb’s previous offering, but specifically “written to make you get up out of your chair.” The book offers lyrics to each track, plus step-by-step instructions for dance moves and general suggestions for getting down while you listen. (The spread for “Monster Stomp” includes tips for scaring one away: “1. Stomp the ground. 2. Wave your arms around. 3. Let out a great big growl…”) Ryan O’Rourke’s oil and acrylic illustrations lend additional silliness to the book; the design is frenetic, but it’s fitting given the concept.
This is another lively offering from Loeb, great for groups and active story hours.
