BGHB nonfiction day

Yesterday we gave you web extras on the 2013 BGHB Picture Book Award winner and honor books. Today we’re celebrating the nonfiction winners!

The 2013 Boston Globe–Horn Book Nonfiction Award winner is Robert Byrd’s Electric Ben: The Amazing Life and Times of Benjamin Franklin. For reviews of the prolific author/illustrator’s other work, including more biographies, click here. Viki Ash and Thom Barthelmess offer more recommendations in “What Makes a Good Picture Book Biography” (from our March/April 2011 special “Fact, Fiction, and In Between” issue).

Andrea Davis Pinkney’s Coretta Scott King winner Hand in Hand: Ten Black Men Who Changed America (illustrated by Brian Pinkney) received a BGHB Nonfiction Honor. Look for her CSK Award acceptance speech in the upcoming July/August Horn Book Magazine issue; in the meantime, read her Q&A about Hand in Hand from our January/February 2013 issue.

Honor book Dreaming Up: A Celebration of Building (written and illustrated by Christy Hale) features both landmark architecture and children’s own building play. Click here for more picture books about architecture and construction.
