Some years ago, I opined in the Horn Book Magazine that the best kind of book to give came in the form of a gift certificate, but then-publisher Anne Quirk accused me of wimping out. So all right then: just from the above, I’d recommend Little Santa for those who still believe and those who used to; Playtime Rhymes for everybody under six; The Abominables for a family read-aloud; and Giving Thanks for more thoughtful variations on “God’s neat; let’s eat.” For more suggestions go to

Roger Sutton has been the editor in chief of The Horn Book, Inc, since 1996. He was previously editor of The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books and a children's and young adult librarian.
