Fiete Choice (Ahoiii, 2015; iOS and Android), an app that challenges users to find the dissimilar object in a group. The app opens to a cast of puzzled-looking characters and friendly accordion music beckoning you to play. Sailor Fiete, your traveling companion, waits on an island, unable to proceed to the next island until you solve a series of puzzles. Each puzzle presents you with several objects, one of which is different from the rest. Correctly choose the unique figure in order to move forward. The puzzles are presented in sets organized by concept, with a progress bar and a star rating at the top of the screen.
At first the puzzles are simple: the first set involves identifying the different animal in a lineup of three figures.
Your performance is rated on a three-star scale, and every incorrect answer loses you a star. When you choose an incorrect figure, the star count on the top of the screen will display a star falling and play a quick high note. After you successfully complete a set of puzzles, Fiete will appear below your star rating to congratulate you. Fiete’s expression changes depending on your rating, but he always maintains an air of encouragement.
As you and Fiete progress, the puzzles increase in difficulty. Later puzzles present more figures with less discernible differences; for instance, you must select which animal in a line-up of six identical animals is facing in a different direction than the rest.
You can also choose to play in a timed mode by selecting the clock figure on the progress screen. In this mode, the progress bar on the top of the screen displays the amount of time you have left. You are given ten seconds to start, and for every correct answer you give, you are rewarded with a couple of extra seconds on the clock. The puzzles are the same type as in the untimed mode, but now puzzles of varying difficulty are presented together at random. The app scores you on the number of correct answers you give before you run out of time and keeps track of your high score.
The app’s watercolor illustrations are as charming as they are simple. Straightforward, clean design makes the app very accessible for younger children. The game play is naturally broken up so that you’ll want to keep going, but if you need to set it down it’s easy to pick back up where you left off.
Fiete Choice offers young users the opportunity to practice critical thinking skills in an engaging, inviting atmosphere — they may not even realize they’re learning while playing!
