Rates effective with the January/February 2008 issue of the Magazine.
Contracted rates are based on the frequency of advertising in both the Magazine and the Guide.

Color ads are available only on covers. Add $75 per page for preferred positions and special placement requests. Qualified advertising agencies receive a 15% discount.

Size Specifications

Publication trim size: 6" x 9"
Bleed: 6-1/4" x 9-1/4"  Note: This allows 1/8" to be trimmed from all edges. We recommend that you consider the live area of a bleed ad to be 5-1/4" x 8-1/4", keeping all type within this area and avoiding rules or borders that are 3/8" or less from the edge of the page.
Full page: 5" x 8"  Note: This allows 1/2" of white space between ad and edge of page.
1/2 page vertical: 2-3/8" x 8"
1/2 page horizontal: 5" x 4"
1/4 page: 2-3/8" x 3-7/8"

Materials Specifications

All copy is subject to approval by The Horn Book, Inc. Advertisers will be charged for alterations of materials that do not meet specifications.

Darkest area of halftone should not exceed 80% to allow for dot gain.

Formats (in order of preference)
    • High-resolution PDF
    • EPS with TIFF preview and fonts saved as outlines (details here)
    • 300 ppi grayscale TIFF
Please note that ads created in Adobe InDesign and then saved as PDFs sometimes experience conflicts when placed in Quark. To avoid this, output a postscrpit file and create your PDF using Acrobat Distiller. Please do not use TrueType fonts as they cause conflicts on press.

Classified Advertising

Use classifieds to advertise antiquarian bookstores or search services, promote events or announce special publishing offers.

Rates: $2.50/word; ten word minimum. Full payment must be received with copy seven weeks prior to publication date. For example, copy and payment for the January/February 2008 issue must be received by November 15, 2007.
