I think it's more like a Christopher Paolini knock. Not every fantasy needs to compensate for the lack of an uncompelling story by piling on the local color.

Made me think of Diana Wynne Jones' extremely clever and apt Tough Guide to Fantasyland. Among other things she stresses the importance of apostrophes in names.

When I first read it, I thought it was a Paolini knock, too, but the alt tag (what pops up if you leave your mouse over the picture with no buttons depressed) says "I'm looking at you, Anathem." I loved Anathem (_and_ its Latinate 'fake' words, which are actually a major plot point), and I'm trying to restrain myself from a 2500-word defense. . . .
