Lions are . . .
The New York Times Best Illustrated Books list is out, along with my review of The Lion & the Mouse. What a great book--I wish they had given me twice the space. When I sat down with it and my two young neighbors, the two year old boy announced, looking uncertainly at the cover, "lions are scary." His more intrepid four-year-old sister took over the narration from there ("Look out for the bird!") until the end, whereupon the two-year-old said, "lions are NOT scary." Now it's his favorite book, so we gave him a copy for his birthday, along with a little plastic lion he can carry around in his hand. What's your talisman?

My talisman is a rhino, and it would be SOOOooo cool if Jerry Pinkney would feature one in a book as wonderful as The Lion & The Mouse!
A ladybug due to 9/11. Long story involving my class coping back then in NYC, good luck, Swiss chocolate, etc etc.
I'm embarrassed to admit that I haven't read The Lion & The Mouse yet (I will! I will!), but...
it's funny that the book features the same title as a New Yorker article about the relationship between Anne Carroll Moore and E.B. White.
Hidden allegory? Of course not, but... am I the only person who thinks that would be fun? Like, REALLY fun?
My talisman is a white dove that I paint in every picture book. It is a symbol of good luck. There's an explanation on my blog in the Miriam Cohen interview.
Jerry Pinkney is one of the nicest people in this business. On that alone I'd vote for him. Plus he's a fantastic artist. Win/Win!
