Celebrate all the great things indie bookstores do for books and the community with Anita Silvey and Jill Lepore, while getting some of your holiday shopping done.
Inspired by Sherman Alexie, Indies First is an opportunity for authors to be “booksellers for the day,” so from roughly 11:00am-4:00pm on Small Business Saturday you will be able to get book recommendations from two of Boston’s brightest literary minds.
Anita Silvey is the author of The Essential Guide to Children’s Books and Their Creators, 100 Best Books for Children, 500 Great Works for Teens, and a number of other works. She currently teaches courses in children’s literature at Simmons College in Boston and St. Michael’s College in Burlington, Vermont.
Jill Lepore is the David Woods Kemper ’41 Professor of American History at Harvard University and a staff writer at The New Yorker. Her books include New York Burning, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize; The Name of War, winner of the Bancroft Prize; The Mansion of Happiness, which was short-listed for the 2013 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction, and her latest book, Book of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin. So if you’re shopping for a history buff, there’s no better brain to pick.
