Harry
Clement Stubbs
Harry Clement Stubbs, long-time associate
of the Horn Book, passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2003. He
was eighty-one.
Harry’s column “Views
on Science Books” appeared from 1967 to 1985 in The Horn
Book Magazine; he also reviewed for The Horn Book Guide
since its inception in 1989. With degrees in astronomy, chemistry
and education, Harry taught high school science for forty years,
thirty-eight of them at Milton Academy in Milton, Massachusetts.
Harry was well known as the adult science fiction writer Hal Clement;
his most famous novel, Mission of Gravity, led him to be
called the grandfather of “hard” science fiction —
in which science was the most important aspect and, because it was
Harry, always accurate.
Harry’s reviews and his incredibly
detailed knowledge of the subjects he was reviewing will be sorely
missed by his friends at the Horn Book.
