New World Coming

A new website, anyway, launching next Tuesday, September 6th (fingers, legs, eyes, toes, etc. crossed). The address remains the same–www.hbook.com–but the look will be livelier and the navigation easier. This blog will be at hbook.com/blogs/readroger (likewise for /outofthebox) and don’t forget our new blog debuting that day, /callingcaldecott.

One thing I’m most looking forward to is the ability to make and respond to comments about any articles, not just blog posts, we put on the site, and I’m hoping you will, as Quentin Blake had it, all join in.

In any event, we are going to be totally copying Li’l Sis this fall as we embark on a companion to SLJ’s Heavy Medal blog, which runs throughout the fall and early winter, parsing the rules and possibilities for the Newbery Medal. Our blog, to be helmed by Horn Book designer Lolly Robinson and Magazine reviewer Robin Smith, will focus on the Caldecott: what might win? what can win? what should win?

More details will be forthcoming but this blog needs a NAME. Put your suggestions in the comments; the winner–if there is one–will receive a signed and inscribed copy of A Family of Readers.

I just found out via Twitter that former HB editor Anita Silvey has a new blog, the Children’s Book-a-Day Almanac. God help her, Anita is posting a book recommendation daily, each tied in some way to that day’s significance. Today, for example, she writes about the D’Aulaires’ Abraham Lincoln in honor of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, delivered on November 19th, 1863. The posts are persuasive and rich with history, publishing and otherwise. Check it out.

Our new blog

Yes, I’m going to continuing mouthing off over here, but today the Horn Book debuts a second blog, Out of the Box. Although its nature will be defined as we go, its goal is to provide coverage of some of the many books, near-books and neo-books that don’t need review so much as they need attention. >Anita Lobel was great and glamorous for her Zena Sutherland Lecture last Friday night in Chicago, and we will be bringing you that speech in an upcoming issue. Thank goodness for our full-color printing as Anita Lobel paints the most beautiful colors I know and Lolly should be in pig(ment) heaven choosing illustrations. Thanks again to Greenwillow Books for supporting Anita’s appearance in Chicago and to executive editor Steve Geck for coming along. And don’t miss next year’s lecture on May 6th, 2011, at the Harold Washington Library in Chicago, where the lecturer will be Mo Willems.

I see from blog-browsing and from Twitter that Jennifer Armstrong’s children’s-book-based argument for vegetarianism is getting a lot of response; The Tea Cozy has rounded some of them up. Thanks, Liz! I’m hoping that we can soon swipe some technological expertise from our new sister and make it possible for people to comment right where the article lives.

Now I’m deeply into planning the July awards issue (I think you all are going to love it), BEA (where I’ll be moderating a panel for SLJ’s Day of Dialog) and ALA, for which I’m currently lining up the Live Five interviews–Jerry Pinkney, Rebecca Stead and Libba Bray are already scheduled. More to come.
