What about BoB?

I missed the fact that SLJ’s annual Battle of the Kids’ Books is underway but it’s only gone three brackets so go catch up. Sy Montgomery just totally wimped out with a coin toss.

  1. Sam Bloom says:

No, she didn’t wimp out… she actually reasoned it out pretty well and I was willing to go with her on the coin toss because of the way she set up the rest of her post. Now, Julius Lester a few years back… HE wimped out completely. Worst BoB post EVER.

  2. Steffaney Smith says:

Roger, I actually think she said that to get us going! I imagine even a great writer with a preference towards nonfiction can choose between 2 works of fiction…and I think she intended to tap “Chime” all along, just did the coin toss for added drama…and it worked!

  3. It’s really not that hard to write glowing praise of a good book. What’s hard is making a decision between two of them and telling an author, “I liked this other book better.” She wimped out.

Contrary-wise, I didn’t mind Julius Lester’s judgement at all. People who try to review books with their best approximation of objectivity are a dime a dozen. What I like best about the Battle of the Books is the way it depends on circumstance, much like March Madness. Your team had a bad game? Too bad! I don’t really need another venue for careful reviews. I want some fun, dammit.
