Feeling thankful

pumpkins-and-candlesIt’s almost Thanksgiving — one of my favorite holidays, and not just for the obvious, delicious reasons. I like noticing what’s good. I like the calendar-sanctioned excuse to be sappy. And even when life isn’t perfect, there are still things to be thankful for. Here are a few of mine:

Horn Book staff, I’m thankful for your ability to spend days discussing the wording of one sentence so that every book gets the clearest review possible, and also to juggle precisely ten thousand and three other things at the same time. On a related note, Horn Book reviewers, I’m thankful you haven’t blocked my email address.

Kidlit community, I’m thankful for your lively investment in the field, and for your willingness to evolve. I’m thankful that even when we disagree, the bottom line is that we all care about the books we share with kids.

Kids, I’m thankful that you’re the future. (Clichés, I’m thankful that some of you are right.)

Happy Thanksgiving.
