Tullet’s latest old-school interactive picture book (Press Here, rev. 7/11, et al.) plays with sounds, primary colors, and creativity. The book begins in familiar Tullet fashion: touch a small blue dot and “say a little oh!” Press a large blue dot and “say A HUGE OH!” Various-sized blue dots call for louder or softer “OH”s. The friendly narrator gently encourages listeners to play along in increasingly imaginative scenes; eventually a red dot joins blue (“say AH”), followed later by yellow (“say WAAHOO”). OH, AH, and WAAHOO bounce wildly together or in formation, the vibrant illustrations reflecting the appropriate mood. The concept becomes more complex, raucous, and eye-catching — with the sound dots representing cars, bird songs, and ultimately “a whole new language.” The joyous finale erupts in a glorious mix of sounds (“Pluck!” “Zoop!”) and primary- and secondary-color dots. There’s no one way to read this book, making each encounter a fresh experience.
