Small print

Some of your favorite novels have just been miniaturized…and flipped sideways. “Penguin Minis” present unabridged texts in a horizontal format with a trim size of roughly 5” x 3”. First introduced in the Netherlands as “Flipbacks” (primarily itty-bitty editions of popular adult books), the line launches in the United States with four titles from the celebrated John Green: An Abundance of Katherines, The Fault in Our Stars, Looking for Alaska, and Paper Towns.

The books, which look adorably smart lined up next to one another, are meant to be like scrolling through an electronic device. Indeed, when opened the spread is about the size of an e-reader. These mini editions have adapted the endangered print book to convenience culture.

New readers don’t really catch a price break — at $12 individually ($48 for the boxed set), they cost just a few bucks less than the hardcovers — but it is easier for fans to keep their favorite novels close to their hearts. These teeny-weeny Greenies (thanks, Shoshana!) leave book lovers with one unresolved question: now what do I do with all these cute book totes?

[Ed. note: the size of the typeface in these editions is actually comparable to that in the full-size novels; we just appreciate a snappy title.]
