Getting ready to blow

Today we all meet to decide Fanfare, the Horn Book's choices for the best books of 2017. As I type, strategic alliances are being formed  to whittle down the current list of some sixty titles to... well, fewer. A lot fewer. It would be great if sometime before I retire I could strong-arm the staff into a list of about, say, seven. While I maybe keep an eye on the list skewing too young or too old, the great thing about Fanfare is that along with having no set number of titles, there is no mandate to distribute our selections proportionately, whether regarding age level or genre or publisher. (It just registered with me that HarperCollins has three out of the five nominees for the National Book Award for Young People's Literature being announced tonight. Way to go, guys.) Wish us luck--we'll be publishing the list next month.
