Purim begins tonight, and it celebrates many things: the freedom to be who we are and worship as we choose, and, particularly relevantly for International Women’s Day, the heroism of Queen Esther, who spoke up to save her people. (Her predecessor, Queen Vashti, was no slouch either.) We celebrate with jelly-filled cookies and silliness.
There are many good ways to spend International Women’s Day (see this post https://www.hbook.com/?detailStory=international-womens-day-2020 for lots of books to read). This woman spent it baking hamentaschen — and, when the strawberry jam was a little too runny for the cookies to hold their shape, persisted by switching to blackberry. And then called her grandmother to thank her again for the recipe.
