Adolescent upsets

In addition to the satisfying spectacle of Maria Sharapova being picked off by a younger (and quieter!) player, I was also treated this past weekend to a superb exposition of teen angst, in the unlikely Broadway musical Spring Awakening. Based on Frank Wedekind's 1891 German play, the show and catchy tunes are pure YA: love, sex, death, and grades. Go see it. Take the kids!

For a parent who sat patiently in silent suffering through both High School Musicals, it's nice to hear a real song like "Bitch of Living." If that came on the radio, I'd rock out. Good stuff.

No need to take the kids. They go over and over and over and over and over..... (fairrosa talked me into going and I agree with her and you and the kids --- a one fantastic show. And you can rock out --- download the tunes from ITunes. Some are on the show's website too.)

Shameless name dropping: Duncan Sheik was a student at the junior high boarding school where I taught. He would often play his guitar in the commons room of my dorm with his buddies.
I imagine the screaming of my infant daughter inspired him to greatness. Yeah, right.

It would relieve me greatly to know that theater kids are flocking to this rather than High School Musical!

I was in NYC a few weekends ago. My roommate and I went to the half-priced tickets booth in Time Square and where we couldn't decide between Spring Awakening or Monty Python's Spamalot. Unfortunatly, I found out first hand that Spamalot is pretty terrible.

At least the Schubert Theatre decor is eye catching...
