American Antiquarian Society

Fellowships for Creative and Performing Artists and Writers
The Society's fellowships support the writing of nonfiction historical works for general audiences of adults and/or children. At least three $1,200 fellowships (plus travel allowances) are awarded for residences of four weeks in Worcester, MA.

Science Writing Award
AIP promotes "the advancement and diffusion of the knowledge of physics and its application to human welfare." The Science Writing Award is given to a book or article intended for children fifteen or under. The winner receives a $3,000 prize.

Associates of the Boston Public Library

Children's Writer-in-Residence Program
Provides an emerging children's writer with nine months of financial support ($20,000 stipend) and a work space in the Central Library.

Association of Jewish Libraries

The Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award
Established to encourage aspiring authors of Jewish children's books, the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award provides $1,000 to the best fiction manuscript appropriate for readers ages 8–11 written by an unpublished author.

Fiction Contest
Highlights for Children sponsors an annual themed short story contest open to both published and unpublished authors. Authors of winning stories are awarded $1,000.

International Reading Association

Lee Bennett Hopkins Promising Poet Award
Every three years, $500 is granted to a promising poet who has published no more than two books of poetry for children or young adults.

Jack Ezra Keats/de Grummond Collection Children's Literature Research Fellowship Program

Grant's of up to $750 may be made to applicants of any discipline who engage in projects which require substantial use of the de Grummond Collection.

New Voices Award
Recognizes a children's picture book text by a writer of color. The winner receives $1,000 and a standard publication contract from Lee & Low books. An Honor Award winner receives $500.

The Loft Literary Center

McKnight Artist Fellowship for Writers
Founded in 1974, the Loft Literary Center offers classes, readings, competitions, and other programs for readers and writers. The McKnight Artist Fellowships provide Minnesota writers with an opportunity to concentrate on their work. A $25,000 fellowship is awarded each year in children's literature (poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction).

Fellowships and Mentorships
Founded in honor of Australia's first professional picture book illustrator, the Trust provides studio apartments for residential fellowships for Australian authors and illustrators, as well as mentoring for fledgling creators.

PEN American Center

Awarded annually by PEN to a published author of children's or young adult fiction whose "work is of high literary caliber but has not yet attracted a broad readership."

Delacorte Dell Yearling Contest for a First Young Adult Novel

Random House Children's Books sponsors two contests for either unpublished writers or writers diversifying to a new age group. Prize winners receive $1,500, as well as an advance of $7,500 against royalties.

The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators

The Kimberly Colen Memorial Grant
SCBWI provides a networking community for writers, illustrators, editors, publishers, agents, librarians, educators, and booksellers. SCBWI members who have not yet published a children's book may apply for this grant, which provides $2,500 plus expenses incurred during the SCBWI Winter Conference. SCBWI offers other grants and awards for Members and Associate Members. All awards are listed at the SCBWI website.

Billie M. Levy Travel and Research Grant
Grants ranging from $500 to $1200 are awarded once each year, on a competitive basis, to promising undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral students, established scholars, educators, authors and illustrators who plan to conduct research using the Northeast Children's Literature Collection.

The Anna Zornio Memorial Children's Theatre Playwriting Competition
Created to honor the late Anna Zornio, an alumna of the University of New Hampshire, for her dedication to and inspiration of children's theatre playwriting, this award offers a $1,000 prize every four years for the best play for children.

Ezra Jack Keats/Kerlan Memorial Fellowship
Provides $1,500 to a "talented writer and/or illustrator of children's books who wishes to use the Kerlan Collection for the furtherance of his or her artistic development." Transportation costs are covered by the fellowship.
