Transgender Awareness Week 2018

This week is Transgender Awareness Week, and Transgender Day of Remembrance will be observed next Tuesday, November 20th. We join our trans, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary family members, friends, and neighbors near and far in celebrating the lives of trans people, remembering those lost to transphobic hate crimes, and renewing our commitment to fight for trans rights.

We are hopeful that Massachusetts’s vote to uphold protections for trans people in public facilities in last week’s election will encourage similar legislation around the country. However, as Kitty writes at Family Reading, life is especially difficult and dangerous for trans, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary people under the current administration, and much more work remains to be done — particularly around protecting and supporting people of color and Native people in the trans community.

Here’s an updated roundup of resources to help spread understanding and inspire action from The Horn Book’s archives and beyond.
