What Is Crisanto Wearing?

Crisanto Guadiz is my brother-in-law of twenty-six years, married to baby brother Rand (whose image you may recall from his stint as a Horn Book poster child). The thing about a visit to Cris and Rand is that everything looks perfectly conventional on the surface, a suburban couple of DINKs (he's a medical researcher; he's in finance) ... and then you see the action figures and superhero stuff everywhere and realize that you've entered Fan Boy Central. So you can bet they were pleased when Henry "Hubba-Hubba" Cavill happened to drop by just before we started sheltering in place and has thus been with them since. You can read of his antics below. Oh, Henry!

Is my brother treating you well?

Yes, your brother is treating me very well. Every day I am reminded of just how lucky I am to have a husband like him. I can't imagine a better person to spend quarantine time with!

Speaking as a science guy, what kind of more or less permanent changes do you think we’ll see as the world opens back up?

I definitely think people will come out of this pandemic with a new awareness and appreciation for all the many ways germs can be spread from person to person, and hopefully people will have learned some better behaviors and practices to maintain good personal hygiene.

What do you think will happen with community theater? I know you guys are big on that.

I think community theater, same as professional theater, will find a way to adapt to post-pandemic life, but I don't think anything can really get started back up again until theater companies and organizations learn how to safely mount productions and keep their actors safe. This will be a big challenge because of the nature of theater and how physically close cast members get to one another before (in the green room), during (on stage), and after a performance (at a cast party). I suspect there will be a good number of community theater performers who will be hesitant to return because the health risk will not fully justify the need/desire to fulfill a typically unpaid hobby.

What have you read during the lockdown that you think the rest of us might like? Watched?

I recently read Stephen King's The Outsider, and then not long after watched the HBO series adaptation of it. I enjoyed both very much. I have also started re-reading a wonderful series of books by Michael Thomas Ford: Last Summer, Looking For It, Full Circle, Changing Tides, What We Remember, and The Road Home. These novels, which are set in Provincetown, are a fun escape that takes you through all the emotions! A recently watched series I highly recommend is Encore on Disney+. This show reunites classmates to mount in only five days a production they performed in high school.

Has Henry Cavill proved himself a useful houseguest? He’s been visiting a while, right?

Henry has been with us since just before the start of shutdown, and he has been a welcome distraction! At first he was happy to ham it up for the camera, but then he started to withdraw into his isolation and would scream "No Paparazzi!" every time I would try to take a picture of him. Some of the shots I got can be seen at https://www.flickr.com/gp/crisanto/8qc3re.

Your baby brother hasn't been in Finance for 20 years. You're a librarian, right?
