The Horn Book, Inc. is now accepting applications for Spring 2022 internships, which will likely include a combination of remote work and in-person work in our office on the Simmons University campus. Start date is projected as within January 2022. Our parent company, MediaSource, strongly encourages employees to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, and everyone, vaccinated or not, must wear a mask in the office except when social distancing is possible or when actively eating. The deadline for Spring 2022 applications is November 1, 2021.

Editorial interns posted with The Horn Book, Inc. assist with, in digital and/or physical formats: managing incoming books, distributing books to reviewers, shelving books in the office collection, filing reviews, maintaining the Horn Book database, occasional light typing and proofreading, mailing out complimentary issues, fact-checking, writing blog posts, and other projects as needed. Interns are encouraged to explore the Horn Book’s (digital or physical) books and ask many questions.

The Horn Book, Inc., offers paid internships for the spring, summer, and fall terms. Hours may vary according to the needs of the intern and Horn Book staff, but are typically around ten hours per week.

Applicants should have a strong interest in children’s literature and should familiarize themselves with the Horn Book’s publications before applying. Cover letter and resume should be emailed to Shoshana Flax (sflax at hbook dot com).

Freelance reviewers

The Horn Book, Inc. considers applications from potential book reviewers. Candidates should have a thorough knowledge of youth literature, ideally with specific subject or genre expertise, and professional experience working with children and books, along with excellent writing skills. Freelance writers

Potential contributors are advised to have a solid familiarity with The Horn Book Magazine before submitting manuscripts. Articles submitted should be of a critical nature on some aspect of children’s literature and should be no longer than 1600 words. Please allow four months for a decision on acceptance. Payment is received upon publication. The magazine does not publish fiction, nor does it publish work by children.
