Horn Book/Simmons Fellow 

The Horn Book, Inc. is now accepting applications for the Horn Book/Simmons Fellow. This is a newly created role to be filled by a current or recent graduate-level student of children’s literature, library science, or archives at Simmons University. At least one graduate-level course in children’s literature is preferred; strong interest in the subject is required. The successful candidate will act as on-campus liaison and hybrid-work support for the Horn Book in preparation for and during its centennial year of 2024.  

This is a one-year commitment, with start date projected as September 2023. Hours may vary according to the needs of the Fellow and Horn Book staff but will typically be between ten and twenty hours per week at $15 per hour. The deadline for applications is September 1, 2023.  

Tasks will include:  

  • Seek, digitize, and transmit past Horn Book articles and other materials, especially those to be used for the Horn Book’s centennial celebration.  
  • Help maintain, organize, and facilitate access to Simmons’s Book Nook in the Children’s Literature suite. 
  • Participate in editorial meetings and brainstorm sessions around centennial celebration.  
  • Other Horn Book and/or Simmons duties as assigned.

The Horn Book, Inc. considers applications from potential book reviewers. Candidates should have a thorough knowledge of youth literature, ideally with specific subject or genre expertise, and professional experience working with children and books, along with excellent writing skills. Freelance writers

Potential contributors are advised to have a solid familiarity with The Horn Book Magazine before submitting manuscripts. Articles submitted should be of a critical nature on some aspect of children’s literature and should be no longer than 1600 words. Please allow four months for a decision on acceptance. Payment is received upon publication. The magazine does not publish fiction, nor does it publish work by children.
