Publishers' Preview: Spring 2023: Five Questions for DK Dyson and Rudy Gutierrez

This interview originally appeared in the March/April 2023 Horn Book Magazine as part of the Publishers’ Previews: Spring 2023, an advertising supplement that allows participating publishers a chance to each highlight a book from its current list. They choose the books; we ask the questions.

For Window Fishing, all you need is a string, a paper clip, and hope.

1. Is this book a family affair?

DK DYSON: It’s based on a true story that Rudy, myself, and our daughter, Sandflower, witnessed. The paper clip on a string from the apartment above, hitting our window, inspired me.

Rudy Gutierrez: DK is an incredible storyteller. We’ve dreamed of collaborating on books to bring our magical visions to kids.

2. Have you tried window fishing?

DKD: Not yet, but I’m excited to try — though my drawings of sea life would be unrecognizable and absolutely hilarious.

RG: I’m officially a window fisher, crayon or paintbrush in hand, ready to send and receive seaworthy drawings or paintings to bring smiles and good vibes to all involved.

3. Most unlikely thing you’ve seen from your window?

DKD: From our apartment in New York City (when we lived on the Hudson River), I enjoyed watching the Circle Line tour boat going on its daily route, but the string with a paper clip attached floored me.

RG: Other than DK and a couple of friends serenading me for my birthday, that string with the paper clip!

4. DK, what was the most surprisingly difficult thing about writing a picture book?

DKD: Despite my experience composing music and writing lyrics, my biggest challenge was finding the right rhythm — when to stretch out an action or be extra concise. Also, having to leave out some of Rudeday’s comical grumblings!

5. Rudy, or may I say Rudeday? That you?

RG: NO, NO, NO! Okay, maybe — loosely, loosely based. I will not plead the Fifth but will say, “Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events, is purely coincidental.” I assume DK and Sandflower would answer differently!
