Teacher Appreciation 2018

May 7-11 is National Teacher Appreciation Week, and today is National Teacher Day, a day on which the National Education Association hopes we will all go out of our way to #ThankATeacher. We are both the parents of two elementary-school-aged children, and we send HUGE thank yous to the teachers, specialists, paraprofessionals, administrators, chefs, custodians, afterschool staff, and many others who keep our kids engaged and safe every day of every week.

Last year we lost beloved Friend of the Horn Book and #TeacherWithSuperpowers Robin Smith, the second-grade teacher we all wish we could have. Here is a piece she wrote in 2008 about the teachers, from children's books, who inspired her: "Teachers I Remember."

Find many more book recommendations -- and an interview with Adam Rex and Christian Robinson about School's First Day of School -- in our "What Makes a Good School Story?" newsletter.

Check our Lolly's Classroom blog for discussion of the many ways teachers use trade books in the classrooms.

And don't forget to #ThankATeacher!

Isaac Newton Farris

This week the first full week in May, every year, is supposed to be when we uplift and honor a certain profession. I’m embarrassed to admit the only way I know this is from a google doodle I encountered while doing a search Monday morning, considering I have close blood relatives that serve in the profession, embarrassment is an understatement. Unfortunately, I am not alone in my ignorance, the rest of American society seems to be just as unknowing as I was, considering that this profession ranks 2nd only to the medical profession in the proliferation of human life development, all of America should be embarrassed over the diamonds among us that we simply refuse to acknowledge! The diamonds among us we simply refuse to acknowledge are........http://isaacnewtonfarris.com/diamonds-among-us-we-simply-refuse-to-acknowledge/
