Alice Provensen (1918-2018)

Author and illustrator Alice Provensen died April 23, 2018, in San Clemente, California. She was ninety-nine. With her late husband and collaborator Martin Provensen, she illustrated more than forty children’s books, including The Glorious Flight: Across the Channel with Louis Blériot, winner of the 1984 Caldecott Medal, and A Visit to William Blake’s Inn: Poems for Innocent and Experienced Travelers, winner of a 1982 Caldecott Honor as well as the 1982 Boston Globe–Horn Book Award for Picture Book. Their long joint career began in 1947 with The Fireside Book of Folksongs; many of their early titles were hugely popular Golden Books (Old Mother Hubbard; A Child’s Garden of Verses). After Martin’s death in 1987, she embarked on a solo career; her last book, Murphy in the City, was published in 2015.
