The Horn Book Guide Online counts seventy-nine biographies of Martin Luther King Jr. as being published in the last twenty-nine years. No doubt there are always more books about the man to be written, but what, exactly, can a new book bring to our understanding of this American hero? I went to New York last month to talk to Andrea Davis Pinkney about her and her husband Brian Pinkney's Martin Rising: Requiem for a King, a resplendent volume of poetry and painting devoted — daringly, I think — to King's last days.
