April Boston-area children's lit events

April (snow) showers bring... lots of April book events! Here’s a small sampling; check out our event calendar for all details and even more events in the Boston area.

April is National Poetry Month! See the Academy of American Poets website for resources and local event listings.

"The Art of Eric Carle: Hide and Seek" exhibit opens at The Carle Museum today, April 5th.

Richelle Mead, author of the YA series Vampire Academy, will sign her new novel The Glittering Court at An Unlikely Story at 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 7th. Register for free here.

rutkoski_winner's kissOn Friday, April 8th, at 7:00 pm, join the Harvard Book Store for a conversation between YA authors Marie Rutkoski (Winner's trilogy) and Kristin Cashore (Graceling series).

The Writers' Loft will host a "Picture Book Brainstorming 102" workshop with Deb O’Brien from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Saturday, April 9th. The event is free for Loft members, $5 for nonmembers.

Tuesday, April 12th is Drop Everything and Read Day. Check the D.E.A.R. website for local events and activity suggestions.

For Authorfest Winchester, authors and illustrators will visit Winchester classrooms throughout the school day on Tuesday the 12th. Autographed copies of their books will be available for purchase at the Winchester Town Hall from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.

The Passion of Dolssa author Julie Berry has two upcoming local events: Wednesday, April 13th, at the Cambridge Public Library and Thursday the 14th at Wellesley Books. Both events begin at 7:00 pm.

Also on Thursday the 14th, YA fantasy authors Sarah Rees Brennan and Holly Black will be reading and signing their newest novels at Brookline Booksmith at 7:00 pm. They will also be appearing at the Odyssey Bookshop at 4:00 pm on Saturday, April 16th.

andrews_hatersAlso on Thursday the 14th, Jesse Andrews will be celebrating the release of The Haters with an event at the Cambridge Public Library at 7:00 pm. He will be at the Brookline Booksmith on Sunday, April 17th, at 6:00 pm.

Ethan Murrow and Vita Murrow, author and illustrator of The Whale, will read and sign at Porter Square Books on Thursday the 14th at 7:00 pm and at The Blue Bunny on Sunday the 17th, at 1:00 pm.

The Edward Gorey House will reopen on Friday, April 15th.

John Bemelmans Marciano will be at the Odyssey Bookshop at 4:00 pm on Friday the 15th to celebrate his new novel series The Witches of Benevento.

denos_swatchJulia Denos will read and sign her new picture book Swatch: The Girl Who Loved Color at Brookline Booksmith at 10:30 am on Saturday, April 16th.

Peter H. Reynolds will be reading and signing his latest picture book Playing from the Heart at The Blue Bunny on Saturday the 16th at 11:00 am.

On Saturday the 16th from 12:30 to 3:00 pm, Heather Lang, Jane Sutcliffe, Cheryl Lawton Malone, and Ammi-Joan Paquette will participate in An Unlikely Story's Local Children's Author Showcase.

Courtney Waring will teach “An Introduction to Visual Thinking Strategies” workshop at The Carle Museum on Tuesday, April 19th, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The workshop fees are $42.50 for Carle members, $50 for nonmembers. 4 PDP.

Author, instructor, and Horn Book contributor Megan Dowd Lambert will teach a “Reading Picture Books with Children” workshop at The Carle on Saturday, April 23rd, at 12:00 pm. Free with museum admission; 1 PDP.

grace linAlso at The Carle on Saturday the 23rd, author/illustrator and Newbery Honor winner Grace Lin will deliver the annual Barbara Elleman Research Library (BERL) Lecture at 2:00 pm.

Lisa Yee will sign her new middle-grade book Wonder Woman at Super Hero High at the Odyssey Bookshop at 3:00 pm on Saturday the 23rd.

On Sunday, April 24th, at 3:00 pm, author Leila Sales will discuss and sign her novel Once Was a Time.

Saturday, April 30th is both Independent Bookstore Day and El día de los niños/El día de los libros. See the websites for events near you.

The Blue Bunny will host an Earth Day–themed event with author/illustrator Wendell Minor and author Florence Minor on Saturday the 30th at 2:00 pm.
