Barbara Bader (1927-2021)

We were saddened to learn from her daughter Emily that Barbara Bader died earlier this week. Barbara was a Horn Book stalwart and one of the "Great Ladies" of our publication. The September/October issue of the Magazine will include an appreciation (and see Kevin Henkes's own, from 2018); and you can read some of her articles here, including:

A great mind and a great friend. We were in constant contact over the past half dozen years. Mostly politics, some books, a little poetry. Always plenty to talk about. She will be sorely missed.

So very sorry to hear of Barbara's passing. Her American Picturebooks: from Noah's Ark to the Beast Within is my constant study in thinking about books being published now. Vale Barbara.
