1. Brendan, what interested you in this collaboration?

The inspiring thematic through line of resiliency. This is a story of great hope — and I jumped at the chance to collaborate with Norm to tell that story.

2. Norman, how has your understanding of yourself changed since you wrote Crazy for the Storm for adults in 2009?

Back then I only had my son, Noah; now I also have my daughter, Camille. My experience as a father has been enriched, which has changed me. Interacting with Noah as he’s grown older and with Camille, with her unique ­sensitivities to the world, has awakened insights into my own childhood.

3. Brendan, how are your wilderness skills?

I’ve loved skiing since I was a child. The landscape of Norm’s story let me dive back into my youth, when I adventured through the snowy New England mountain wilderness.

4. Norman, are you still a thrill-seeker?

I still find solace in losing myself in nature. The thrill I get from surfing, skiing, or ­hiking seems to clear my mind.

5. Did you guys compare notes about your dads?

NO: I don’t recall us doing that in a conscious way, but we probably did compare and discuss our fathers through the writing.

BK: We talked about learning from father figures (whoever they are) even if, at the time, our relationships with them were difficult. It’s a muscle I hope this book helps young people build — the ability to learn and grow, even in the hardest moments.
