The Boston Globe-Horn Book Award committee (Liz Phipps Soeiro, Minh Lê, and our own Katie Bircher as chair) is meeting soon to make their final choices. Here's the plan the Globe and the Horn Book have cooked up to announce them.
On Thursday, May 31st, Emily Procknal, President of the Boston Globe Foundation, and I will announce the winners via Facebook Live from my office at noon. I have no idea how any of this works--my only experience with Facebook Live was being in my seat waiting for a show to begin and suddenly seeing my theater companion, who had absented her own seat, Holding Forth on my phone as she delivered, via Facebook Live, an eloquent plea for more stalls in Broadway's ladies' rooms. But the people at the Globe assure me it will be easy-peasy (unlike the situation for female theatergoers) and I have promised to clean my office for the event.
The crack Horn Book social media team will be
tweeting out the news as Emily and I announce each winner, and a recording of the announcement and a press release will be on our website shortly thereafter. The BGHB Awards will be given out on the evening of October 5th in a ceremony at Simmons College. I am sad, if relieved, to tell you that we will not be conducting the Horn Book at Simmons colloquium this year, due to our workload being otherwise full up, but Cathie Mercier and I are planning a stand-alone colloquium (tentatively built around the topic of book evaluation) for next spring, and I'll have more to tell you about that early in 2019.
I do hope you will join us for the announcement on May 31st. Just take your browser and your lunch to
the Horn Book's Facebook page at noon.
