06-shark-attack-620x413On the bus this morning, I sat next to a mom and her strollered two-and-a-half-year-old son. He was being freaking adorable, his big Margaret Keane eyes peering wisely into my own. We’re chatting and the mom asks the boy if he wants to sing “Wheels on the Bus.” That was a challenge I could not refuse. We're coming to the end of the verse and realize I don’t know where they are going but want to give it a shout-out. Out of the side of my mouth I asked Mom for the destination. Oh joy, the library. Then we invented a fingerplay called Shark Attack. I realize no children's librarian’s job is all this, but it's definitely the part I miss!

Two years ago, a Project Headway preschool class was added to my weekly K - 5 schedule. It had been nearly 30 years since I'd worked with PreK kids in a professional capacity, so I spent that first year grumbling and fretting my way through the week, spending an inordinate amount of time before, during, and after school preparing for their visit. But every Friday morning, when they oh-so-gingerly made their way into our library, all trouble was forgotten. After 40 minutes in their company, I was guaranteed a smile that lasted all weekend.
