Today marks the 50th anniversary of the launch of NASA’s Apollo 11, the first space mission to land on the moon. (This Saturday, July 20th will be the anniversary of the actual moon landing and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin's moon walk.) CBS, which broadcast the historic event live in 1969 narrated by anchor Walter Cronkite, will be re-airing the footage tonight; the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. is celebrating with ongoing events at the museum itself, on the National Mall, and traveling exhibits around the country; and the National Gallery of Art in DC will be displaying the special exhibit “By the Light of the Silvery Moon: A Century of Lunar Photographs” through January 5, 2020.
