Flip Flap Farm (September 2013), Nosy Crow’s latest app and companion to the split-page board book of the same name, takes the barnyard animal fun of its predecessor, Animal SnApp: Farm, and presents it in the style of a body flip book. Eleven top halves of various animals pair with eleven bottom halves, allowing for 121 possible combinations. Each animal half comes with a quatrain poem describing that animal.

Swipe one direction and you might discover a "hurkey" — the cross between a horse and a turkey — with a poem discussing the difficult work of pulling a carriage as well as the disappointment of having wings but not being able to fly. Swipe the other direction, and you may end up with a "dicken" — a dog/chicken hybrid — with a poem about herding animals and laying eggs.

Each kooky animal combo enhances the absurdity. Of course, swipe through long enough and you’ll eventually land on the correct animal match, which could lend itself to teachable moments. The accessible vocabulary, read to me option, and text highlighter are tailored for emerging readers, making this app perfect for education as well as entertainment.

Illustrator Axel Scheffler’s wide-eyed cartoon creatures jibe perfectly with the app’s silly tone, while a jaunty musical score and touch-activated animal sounds enhance the overall experience.
