Happy 100th Birthday, Lee Kingman!

On Sunday, October 6, longtime Horn Book colleague Lee Kingman will celebrate her one hundredth birthday! After a visit with Lee, I feel especially fortunate to work in children's books with people who are as funny, smart, and discerning as she is.

Lee's first book reviews were published in the Horn Book Magazine in 1929 when she was just nine years old. Later, she worked as an editor at Houghton Mifflin, became a Folly Cove designer, and wrote many groundbreaking middle grade and young adult novels. She also found time to write The Illustrator's Notebook for The Horn Book and edit several volumes about illustrators.

Roger and I are planning a visit with Lee and her daughter, illustrator Susanna Natti, later this fall. We'll tell you about that visit after it happens. For the time being, here are some pieces from our archives by and about Lee.

 

 

Lolly Robinson

Lolly Robinson is a freelance designer and consultant with degrees in studio art and children’s literature. She is the former creative director for The Horn Book, Inc., and has taught children’s literature at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education. She has served on the Caldecott and Boston Globe-Horn Book Award committees and blogged for Calling Caldecott and Lolly's Classroom on this site.
