In our March/April 2016 issue, Horn Book Magazine editor Martha V. Parravano talked with Julie Berry about how she researched and evoked thirteenth-century Provincia. Read the starred review of The Passion of Dolssa.

Martha V. Parravano: An astounding amount of research went into this book — and surely you must now be the world’s leading expert on Old Provençal!

Julie Berry: I spent two years researching thirteenth-century Provincia, with help from historians, writing and revising slowly as I went. With each pass through the manuscript, I fact-checked and word-checked into the night. I suspect I’m the world’s leading bumbler in Old Provençal, but I do love this beautiful language and its elegant poetry. The process was engrossing and joyful.
