I so remember that discussion on child_lit. It was sparked (I think by me, actually) by the below statement in her eloquent speech. I disagreed with her then and even more so now.I loved her concept of Third Place, but it absolutely was (and still is) online for me. Might be interesting to revisit this in the magazine somehow? In his 1997 State of the Union Message, President Clinton said, "As the Internet becomes our new town square, [we need] a computer in every home." The Internet may be the new town square, but it can never be my Third Place. The Third Place is community; the Internet is isolation. The Third Place is dress-up; the Internet is dress-down.
