The Cooperative Children’s Book Center at the University of Wisconsin–Madison has been tracking the number of children's books created by people of color since 1985. In an interview that will be published in the July/August 2017 issue of The Horn Book Magazine, book review editor Martha V. Parravano talks with CCBC director Kathleen T. Horning about their current report focusing on books published in 2016, as well as how much things have—and haven't—changed over the last thirty-two years.The numbers show that mainstream U.S. publishers still have a lot of work to do, as do we who love sharing books with the kids in our lives. What can we do? Support work by and about people of color. Ask for these books in your libraries; buy these books for your home bookshelves. We all are so much richer when we all are represented.
