“Baby bear, are you stuck in that tree? Little duckling, are you lost in the sea?” Flett (We All Play, rev. 5/21) examines how humans and animals exhibit affection, kindness, and interdependence in a book that celebrates both the natural world and the practical ways one can demonstrate love by helping others. Spreads showing, for example, a baby bear stuck in a tree being rescued and a fish returning a lost duckling to its family are interspersed with images of human families and friends gathering lovingly together: “We love too! / kîstanaw mîna.” Lilting rhymes (“Warm little stones, / what do you know? // The stories inside us / help us to grow”) make for a comforting read. The textured art meets the gentle tone of the text through soft washes of muted color, signatures of Flett’s illustration style. Appended with a list of the featured animals and their Cree names (the Cree alphabet and sounds are explained in detail) as well as a note from the author.
