Former director of Simmons's Center for the Study of Children's Literature and Horn Book Magazine reviewer Susan Bloom's husband David died this week at the age of 91, and I wanted to take a minute to pay tribute to him and all the (what we call locally) Horn Book Husbands, those otherwise sensible men married to the women and men who devote their work--and a large part of their personal--lives to children's books.

Susan Bloom's husband David died this week at the age of 91, and I wanted to take a minute to pay tribute to him and all the (what we call locally) Horn Book Husbands, those otherwise sensible men married to the women and men who devote their work--and a large part of their personal--lives to children's books. David was such a capable and affable partner to Susan in her adventures in this business, and all of us who knew him will miss him.
So, gentlemen of the ensemble, thank you for putting up with our peculiar profession!

Thanks for posting this, Roger, and for linking to the beautiful obituary Susan wrote. I have many memories of times spent with David and Susan, but a favorite is from his first meeting with my son, Rory. I was Susan's student at Simmons then, and Rory (now 20) was 3-years-old. We were at their house for a party, and when David introduced himself, Rory's eyes widened and he said, "I have a book about a boy named David (David Shannon's NO DAVID!, of course). He's very naughty." And with his trademark deadpan wit, David responded, "So am I. Sometimes."Posted : Jul 15, 2017 03:44

Susan and David are a one-of-a-kind partnership, and I'm sure he loved his part in the adventures. We all miss him indeed; thank you for the tribute.Posted : Jul 15, 2017 02:10
