Tom Sullivan on I Used to Be a Fish

sullivan_iusedtobeafishIn our November/December 2016 issue, reviewer Danielle J. Ford asked author/illustrator Tom Sullivan about the origins of his new picture book I Used to Be a Fish. Read the full starred review (and don't miss this silliness).

Danielle J. Ford: This is your first picture book. Of all the topics out there — why evolution?

Tom Sullivan: I didn’t actually set out to write about evolution at all. I was working on a story about an alien, when the line “I used to be a fish” popped into my head. I realized that I, too, used to be a fish (in a way). The whole idea of an imaginative boy telling the story of human evolution just…evolved from there.
