"What do you think of my labyrinth?"

As many of you know, the Horn Book offices are located on the Simmons College campus. Today, looking out my window, I can see a construction crew working on Simmons’s newest addition: a labyrinth.

Simmons Labyrinth

Now, having grown up with the movie Labyrinth, it wasn’t until I took an undergraduate course at Clark University that I learned a “maze” is not the same thing as a “labyrinth.” Mazes are multicursal, designed to confuse and to trick. Labyrinths, however, are unicursal and considered to be primarily meditative tools — one walks slowly along the single path until reaching the center where one then turns right back around and walks slowly out. I think this is a lovely addition to the campus and I will totally take advantage of this calming tool on days when the book piles grow too high and begin to topple over.

But I have to say that I am supremely bummed that this is not what we’re getting:

How cool would it be to get to the Simmons campus in the morning, grab my coffee, then disappear into a giant maze that has David Bowie waiting for me at the end?

Labyrinth movie 2

Incredibly cool. That’s how cool. I could be friends with Ludo! I could pretend that my cat (who just happens to be named Toby) needs to be saved from the Goblin King! It would be great (minus the substantial scratching I would receive getting my cat to and from the campus via public transport)!

As long as there aren’t any of these guys:

Those guys still give me nightmares.

It's funny, I just ran across a very similar labyrinth during our vacation the other day, at the Seattle Center, near the EMP Museum (photo not mine) ...

You remind me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power? What power? The power of voodoo. Who do? You do! Do what? Remind me of the babe... *sigh and swoon*
